Tudor House

This magnificient home is anything but ordinary. With a treatment suite in the basement plus two games rooms and cinema, there is plenty to keep everyone busy in this delightful house, even if the weather closes in. The interior of the house is in keeping with it’s period history and has been sympathically restored with all the luxuries of modern living. The interior throughout is elegant and serene.

The Interior

On the ground floor there is a formal dining room which can seat up to 20 (perfect for those unexpected guests or a special celebration) as well as a huge eating area in the kitchen. The lovely country kitchen includes a Falcon range cooker, and large American fridge/freezer. There is also a microwave and dishwasher. The sitting room has a large woodburning stove, which is the centrepiece of this huge room, plus HD TV and sound system with iPod docking station. Logs are provided for the duration of your stay. Downstairs in the basement which is designed with entertainment in mind, there are games rooms for everyone, a surround cinema experience and a treatment room for anyone in need of pampering. Altogether, a wealth of reception rooms for relaxing and entertaining.

Bedrooms

The bedrooms are located on the first and second floors, all of which are spacious and the double beds are all king size with beautifully comfortable mattresses. Five of the bedrooms have en suite bathrooms and the master bedroom on the second floor is the size of a small apartment with huge bathroom and dressing room.

Outside

Directly outside the house is a private garden with gas bbq, terraced area and comfortable seating. The Estate is classified as a conservation area and the landscaped parkland is contained within tree belts which provide the perimeter to the estate on three sides. In addition there are numerous cottages and converted farm buildings now forming an exclusive and private Victorian village nestling in a wonderful parkland setting. The fields are used for grazing and arable farming. There is easy parking in the grounds.

There are plenty of things to see and do in the beautiful countryside around the Jurassic Coastline, a UNESCO World Heritage site.  Devon has a superb mix of natural beauty spots and areas of interest to explore.
Whatever you’re looking for in a holiday, whether to get away from it all and relax or to get active and explore, you’ll always find things to do in Devon to suit everyone.
Wander around traditional fishing villages or along sandy beaches, explore unspoilt landscapes and a wealth of attractions.  There are so many natural playgrounds including Dartmoor, Exmoor and the coast.  For summer or winter breaks, Devon has plenty to offer all year round.
The choice of attractions in Devon is endless with family fun, historic sites and gardens.  There are award winning animal centres like Pennywell Farm, Paignton Zoo and the National Marine Aquarium.  Discover the history of Devon at one of the stately homes such as Hartland Abbey or if you like nature, there is a nature reserve and bird hide in Colyford. Plus many other reserves, including the beautiful bluebell woods at Blackbury Camp and Holyford.
A great way to explore the local area is the Colyton to Seaton Tramway. Trams operate between Seaton, Colyford and Colyton in East Devon’s glorious Axe Valley, travelling alongside the River Axe estuary through two nature reserves. http://www.tram.co.uk/
There’s plenty to keep the kids entertained. They’ll love a day out at World of Country Life, where they can pet the animals, or Bicton Botanical Gardens, with its woodland railway and indoor and outdoor play areas. For those interested in natural history, there’s a dinosaur museum at Lyme Regis or you can go fossil hunting on Charmouth Beach.
There’s plenty for the adults too. There are many golf courses in the area, including Lyme Regis, Axe Cliff, Bridport and West Dorset, Woodbury Park and Sidmouth. The Darts Farm Village offers a wide range of farm produce and home and garden products.

Cycling

East Devon is a haven for cyclists – miles of pretty lanes with wonderful hedgerows and undulating countryside to keep those muscles toned! Cycles can be hired locally or bring your own.

Walking

There are many beautiful walks in this area of East Devon – the south coast path runs through the Undercliff on the south side of the estate and whilst quite strenuous – if you are fit it is definitely worth the effort. You can walk to Lyme or to Axmouth – Rousdon Estate is about mid way between – and you can reach the south coast path from the road down to the beach.
Cliff walks are well signposted all along the coast – from Beer to Branscombe is another favourite. Also go and visit the donkey sanctuary near Salcombe Regis – there are some great walks on Dunscombe Cliffs at the back where there is over 6 miles of uninterrupted coastal walks between Beer and Sidmouth, much of it on National Trust land – beware of steep hills!!
Heading East into Dorset – Stonebarrow forms the start of a stunning coastal walk which takes you over Golden Cap and some seriously good views from the highest point on Britain’s south coast. Start from the far side of Charmouth – drive up the hill and park over the other side of the cattle grid.

Golf

West Dorset and East Devon have a wide selection of Golf courses, including Nigel Mansell’s Woodbury Park through to the coastal courses of Axcliff (just a mile away), Lyme Regis and Bridport.

As well as deep sea fishing off the coast there is also trout fishing nearby.

Lyme Regis

Located in the south west of Dorset, Lyme Regis is an historic, unspoiled seaside resort and fishing port on the world famous Cobb harbour.  The famous film French Lieutenant’s Woman was shot here. Colourwashed cottages and elegant Regency and Victorian villas line its seafront and flanking streets and there are plenty of good quality restaurants to sample. Hix Oyster & Fishhouse , Lyme Regis is a new restaurant situated high above the beach and offering stunning views along the Dorset coastline – the fish is all sourced from the South West and served in an unfussy, contemporary style.

Beer

In the charming fishing village of Beer, you can go out mackerel fishing for the afternoon or, if your sea legs aren’t that good, visit Pecorama and travel on the Beer Heights Light Railway from which you can enjoy magnificent views of Beer and Lyme Bay. Buy fresh fish off the beach – or get in early at The Mason’s Arms in Branscombe – it is very popular with everyone and the lanes are very narrow!
Axmouth – walking through the back lanes out of West Lodge will eventually lead you to Axmouth, a pretty little village on the river Axe with two pubs both serving good food. The Harbour Inn and TheShip,

In Axminster, try Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s Canteen – it is an old skittles alley converted into a trendy brasserie style restaurant, at the back of the River Cottage shop in the market place. Using only local seasonal produce – (much of it from River Cottage HQ which is just up the road) the food is fresh and tasty and won’t break the bank! A drive north of Honiton to Broadhembury will take you to one of Devon’s prettiest villages with the best food pub in the area The Drewe Arms. Again you must make a reservation as it is very popular with locals – 01404 841267.
Other good eating spots include The Kings Arms at Stockland and if you are a fish lover but want something more casual – By The Bay is a café on the sea front at Lyme serving fantastic fresh fish.

Buying Local Produce

Pinhay Farm which on the main road to Lyme sells fresh eggs and vegetables – Caroline’s red onions, garlic and chillies are exceptionally good.
For your meat requirements head for the Post Office in Colyford – at the back of the shop is Tony and Pete – the Butchers – their meat is highly rated by the locals, and adjacent to him, Nigel serves great bacon and ham.
For fresh fish then try the beach shop at Beer – specialities here include wild sea bass and crab, alternatively there is a good fish shop at the Cob end of Lyme.
Local supermarkets are Tesco in Axminster and Waitrose at Sidmouth.
